Reminiscence Car Show at Brookdale Senior Living - 2016

Written by  Rikki Kirchner
An early morning wake-up call had me out of the house and Erma Chevelle out of the garage, laying down rubber and heading for Camarillo.  Destination, Brookdale Senior Living on Santa Rosa Road in the beautiful foothills of Camarillo.  A stop at Starbucks was in order to make this morning complete.

When I arrived, there was a line of beautiful, shiny classic cars waiting their turn to enter the limited (and very intimate) venue.  I took my spot next to Brian O’Hop’s beautiful 1970 Chevelle SS.  Our cars were a perfect pair set up for the festivities.  Final count…60 cars as space was limited and it was filled to maximum capacity squeezing in the last few as they arrived.

A $20 donation got you a cool purple Alzheimer’s wristband and a yummy lunch with all the fixins!  And of course, a chance to hang out with the seniors that live here and watching them enjoy the hot rods that came to set up for their viewing pleasure.  I spied quite a few of them with their caretakers, being wheeled around in wheelchairs and some with walkers out getting the fresh air and asking questions about the cars.

I spoke briefly with a sweet lady named Gloria and her nurse, Susan.  Gloria was kind enough to pose for me with a cool 1930 Model A sports Coupe belonging to Mike Noguera.  She enjoyed seeing the cars and at one point was seen asking about the massive motor in Greg Nicolls’ 1972 Chevrolet Nova!  It’s all about the horsepower, Gloria!

There were 10 top awards handed out to the automotive beauties, also known as “eye candy”, but actually all of them were winners!

The Ventura County Coachmen presented this car show and it was a HOME RUN for everyone…especially the Alzheimer’s association.  Thank you for all of you that reserved a spot and showed up.  This show did not disappoint.

See you at the next show and keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down!
